Biography

Eyal Sivan

Filmmaker-producer, essayist and independent researcher
Eyal Sivan

Eyal Sivan is a filmmaker-producer, essayist and independent researcher based in Marseille. Born in 1964 in Haifa, Palestine-Israel, and raised in Jerusalem, he has lived in France since 1985.

With no formal academic or professional training, he left secondary school at 17 to start working. He was first a photographer in Tel Aviv, before directing, at 22, his first film Aqabat-Jaber, Passing Through, which won numerous festival awards, including the Grand Prize at the Cinéma du Réel festival.

Over this 40-year career, he has directed more than 15 internationally awarded political documentaries and produced many others. His films have been shown at prestigious festivals and broadcast around the world. Eyal Sivan's work is regularly featured in major art exhibitions and continues to inspire scholars and researchers across disciplines.

Alongside his filmmaking practice, he has pursued a long, itinerant career of lectures and teaching around the world. Eyal Sivan speaks regularly on the use of archives, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, documentary filmmaking and ethics, the representation of political crimes, the political uses of memory, and more.

In 2005, Eyal Sivan became a lecturer at the film school of the Sapir Academic College, Israel. In 2007, he was appointed Reader (associate professor) at the School of Arts and Creative Industries, University of East London (UEL), UK, where he co-directed the MA programme in Film, Video and New Media. At the same time, he joined the 'Round Table' of the spatial architecture research laboratory as an associate researcher and doctoral candidate in the Department of Visual Cultures at Goldsmiths College, University of London, where he earned an MPhil in 2006. In 2009, he was invited as guest professor and advisor to the master's film programme at the Netherlands Film Academy (NFA) – Amsterdam University of the Arts (AHK). Between 2015 and 2020, he was lead professor of the master's programme and head of the film and visual art research unit at the Amsterdam University of the Arts (AHK).

Eyal Sivan is the founder and first editor-in-chief of South Cinema Notebooks, a journal of cinema and political critique published by the Sapir Academic College. He was also for many years a member of the editorial board of La Fabrique, a Paris-based publishing house. He is a founding member of FRACBI, the French coordination for the academic, cultural and sporting boycott of Israel. Based in Marseille since 2020, he ran the production and distribution company Momento Films, which he founded in Paris in 1994. He is now associated with the Marseille-based production company Les films serendipity.

Courses

• Visualising History, reading Walter Benjamin's theses - BA in Film Studies
• What Do We See When We Look? - undergraduate Film Studies
• Independent Film and Video Production - postgraduate
• On Revolution and Cinema - undergraduate Film Studies
• From Idea to Project through Research, a Subjective Journey - introduction to the course series Artistic Research in and through Cinema, focusing on intention and subjectivity. The course defines the stages from intention to project and develops knowledge of the research context and of one's individual positioning within cinematic research, emphasising the ability to understand, develop and creatively express one's subjectivity.
• Method(s) and Methodology in Cinematic Research - within artistic research, one's working method(s) form part of each researcher's artistic identity. This subjective approach to methodology questions existing research methods in other fields, the absence of a fixed methodology in research in and through cinema, and the diversity of its subjective research methods.
• Experience, Experimentation and Research Plan - the role of experience in the process of cinematic and visual research. The dialectical and practical relations between experimentation and experience in research 'in and through cinema'. The research and project plan is conceived and established through the process of experimentation and experience.
• Concept & Process of Conceptualisation - by studying the close links between visual and cinematic concepts and other concepts, this course considers the capacity of visual practice to contribute to new forms of (subjective) knowledge production, emphasising the importance of developing critical concepts throughout the practice process.
• P.O.V. - Conceptualisation and Research Outcomes Exhibition - a workshop based on publishing and exhibiting research and project outcomes with regard to each researcher's point of view (POV) on knowledge production. The workshop invites critical examination of the academic written abstract and presents the practice of the visual abstract as a tool for conceptualising and exhibiting concepts and research outcomes.
• Projecting History - How Cinema Writes History? - the relations between cinema and history operate on several levels. Both are 'edited' along a timeline. They deal with history and its narration, and exist between reality and representation. This practical and theoretical seminar focuses on the relations between history and cinema, emphasising the writing of history in general and the practice of cinema in particular.
• Towards a Critical Visual Thinking - in our image-saturated reality, where icons determine the perception of reality, it is necessary to develop a critical visual theory as a tool for changing reality. This course is a journey through the schools, thinkers, theorists and practitioners of the 20th century and today, active across different disciplines and visual media.
• Cinema History, Memory, Testimony - what do we see when we observe a representation of reality? The course addresses the link between the historical event and time, memory and what is represented by cinema. It questions the dialectic between remembering and forgetting, testimony, who bears witness and what testimony is.
• Ethical Dilemmas in Documentary Filmmaking - visual practice or representation is not morally neutral. Artistic instinct, need or desire, and freedom of expression and creation cannot be the only considerations when making moral choices. The course addresses practical and theoretical questions concerning ethics across different fields and levels of documentary visual practice.
• Introduction to Documentary Cinema - the course presents, in non-chronological order, the multilayered, multiform history of documentary cinema, both as a visual positioning and as an attitude towards reality. So-called documentary, non-fiction or reality-cinema practices, with their many visual genres, function as a laboratory and an avant-garde for all cinematic practices.
