Burundi, Under Terror

Burundi, 21 October 1993: democratically elected President Melchior Ndadaye is assassinated by a group of Tutsi officers. A new spiral of reprisals and counter-attacks begins, fuelled by militias and extremist parties who stoke racial hatred and the flames of terror.

Pogroms follow one another, driving tens of thousands of people onto the roads of exile, within their own country.
